I am starting work on setting up C64 games in GameEx. I noticed there are several emulators out in the wild. So I don't waste hours comparing all of them, what C64 do you run and why? What is the most reliable? Has good support? Easily scripts into GameEx?

Personally I am using WinVice, it integrates well with Gameex, has solid support, and runs all the programs I want it to run. Nothing more I could ask from an emulator. (and if you're interested it also emulates the C128, the VIC20, almost all PET models, the PLUS4 and the CBM-II (aka C610)

Cheers,

Winvice is very good and has the added bonus of support for many more machines.

I personally think that CCS nips it to the post for pure C64 emu quality. I used to be a programmer back in the golden 64 days (started in '84) and notice that a lot of the BUGS are better handled in CCS (this is a good thing). Also, CCS has better interupt timing and the screen refresh syncs to the monitor perfectly.

So, out of a possible 100%, Winvice 91%, CCS 96% (but -5% because you need to register to remove the frequent nag - a pain from gameex execution)

This leaves them both at 91%. but CCS pips it after registering. :)

Thanks much greatflash. lot of help.

I have a question though. Reading your config listing for ccs http://www.gameex.info/forums/index.php?sh...ost&p=38110

Has this work around for zips changed since the 7zip feature was added? Wouldn't it be more direct to utilize Gameex's internal function?

And why why why do these sets come in this format? No matching data names cover to cart to rom. Every letter in a different folder? What kind of obsessive compulsive freak does this?

You would think someone would torrent a good set for crying out loud.

I use the GB64 set. the format is 'gamename (number)'.

There is one difference between using the built in zip suport and my config. If you use my config and the gb64 set, when you select a multi-disk game the archive is decompressed to the emulators folder (temp). This has the added bonus that when you need to swap disk (f10) all that apears in the file browser is the other disks to select.

Hope that helps.

Yes that helps a lot, it still baffles me that the associated art uses no naming convention. I think I'm going to give up on doing a match up.

greatflash you might want to add -window to your runzip.cmd

I didn't get it running right without it.

Also I suggest adding an additional rmdir to the head of the cmd. It will still clear it if the cmd is forced to close.

I have some issue creating snaps-videos where after the allotted time GameEx starts another emu but never exits the last one. The cmd the way its written keeps unpacking the files and running the first file it finds.

To make snaps, you are best to make them out-of gameex. Use something like fraps running the emulator manually. Or wait until a c64 set is released by Emumovies (it wil be).

With regards to rmdir, you can either add it yourself or leave it as it is. the dir will be removed after the next successful run of the emu.

I decided not to add any specific command options to the runzip command. It works for me and others. This enable you to set the emu as you wish and runzip will run it the same. So.. run ccs (out of gameex) and set your desired screen resolution and other options and exit. next time it will run that way. I set it to full screen 640x480 and 60hz refresh.

I would have but I have not figured out to to exit ccs one I go full screen other than alt F4. :)

My config wouldn't stick.

Also yes doing it one by one via fraps would be better quality, but I didnt want to kill myself. I wanted something automated.

I am afraid i do not know why gameex does not exit cleanly when doing auto snaps. You could try editing to c64 config to change the mapkeys.? I really am at a loss...

As I said.. Emumovies will have a c64 set at a later date, lots going on at the moment. That may well be the next project after the ZX spectrum set is complete.
