Yes Im not to pleased with all the negitive attention it is generating over there. Me an MKChamp are talking and will get this squared away.. If I could I'd request that it be removed.. My acct is still pending.

It's a sensitive subject and I expect there will be many opinions on what this would be considered by the Mame devs. The sort of attention we didn't want for it. The worse case scenario is that we will have to remove it and best case scenario is that we get the go ahead from the devs. Even though it is only a patch, I have my reservations if they would condone the patch. This patch is made for private cab owners, and the people who come here are private cab owners, but putting the patch on BYOAC might expose it to an audience which the Mame dev's are very much against.

Oh well, we'll see what happens I guess.

Agreed! :)

I wholeheartily agree as well. It's become more important to get the go ahead now since it's been exposed to a bigger audience, even though I'm 99% sure it doesn't break any Mame TOS, it's best to hear it from the horses mouth. And I guess now is the time since it's not just a patch for a few GameEx forum members anymore.

Is this a question of naming it something too close to the official release? In that case, I think the name has been firmly announced as HoffMame: Sexual Chocolate Edition, which shouldn't get the devs piss to boil, in my opinion. :]

It's not just a matter of changing the name, if this is considered to be a redistribution rather than simply a patch on par to a diff file, then the source code also needs to be released with it as well as the name changed. So it would not be practical to release something as simple as this if you had to include the source code with it. But I don't think this is the case here anyway, but we have to be sure especially now it's been released into the wild.

It has to do with who owns the rights to the original code and who controls how it's released. The MAMEdev's write the official releases and anyone can use them if they abide by the TOS that is distributed with the package. You are not allowed to do certain things which includes changing the code and compiling a binary for redistribution without prior permission. I think releasing the code is ok, it's the binary part that they don't like.

This is not a binary (an executable version of MAME that someone could take and directly run), so it shouldn't be a problem. This is basically a diff file that can that automatically applies the diff. Diff's are deemed ok, so this shouldn't be any different.

In any case, HK is talking to the MAMEdev's about it and will know more soon. Then we won't have to speculate what the official answer is, we will actually have one!

EDIT: HK beat me to it...

Actually I'm not the one in contact with them, but I think Brian or MKChamp is. I don't really have much to do with the patch, I just wrote the PatcherFE program that creates the patched binary used to distrubute the patch. Although I support Brian and gave him my blessing to post the patch here, so I don't wash my hands of the responsibility for it being here. Bottom line is if Mame devs don't like it, it will be removed and never return.

I'm doubtful they don't know about it by now. Usually these things get jumped on pretty quick. I have a mind to think they're feeling smug at everyone shitting bricks.

seems a shame it came to this, but better to err on the side of caution i suppose. would it easy to compile your own for future releases (obviously for my own use).

Yes it is very easy :)

Well I hope pinballjim is happy now. Now he won't see any more binary patches :) Only people who can compile their own will be able to patch Mame from now on.

I knew this would blow up if it was posted on BYOAC, but it was good to hear the thoughts of the Mame devs. I guess they see a diff much differently to a binary patch, and it seems it's more to do with the fact there is no matching source code to go with it. A diff file has the changes in source form.
