DVDs are encoded in a 480i, standard definition format. When played back on a 1080i or 720p HDTV, the low resolution/frame-rate of DVDs or any standard definition video can cause comments such as â??Why is it so blurry?â? and â??Why does your new TV look like **** ?â? These unfortunate comments can be reduced by using video upscaling.

Upscaling Filters â?? ffdshow

A free plug-in for your DVD viewing software is available that will arguably upscale and sharpen video better than any $500 DVD player on the market. This plug-in is called ffdshow and it has almost too many options to mention. Some of them are listed below.

* Sharpening filters

* Blur and noise reduction

* Noise filters

* Resize video

* Aspect ratio correction

* Increase/decrease video delay (helps with lip sync issues)

* Crop or zoom in on video

* Deinterlace filters

* Logoaway gets rid of logos

* Gamma correction

* Luminance correction

* Luminance/chrominance offset

* Bitmap overlay

â?¦. and many more.

All these numerous options makes it difficult to recommend ffdshow settings. You can go to the AVS Forum to access multiple userâ??s opinions. Remember that your choices will be limited to your HTPCâ??s CPU processing power, video card processing power, the amount of RAM installed, and other hardware components. If your HTPC can handle it, one general recommendation is to resize your video to 2.0 times the original size, and then run through the other filters such as blur reduction and sharpening.

ffdshow does not come bundled with GameEx, but you can download and use the ffdshow codecs in GameEx. Newer versions of ffdshow seem to cause some problems though, so I usually recommend the latest daily build of ffdshow from here

I'm not sure if this version has the upscaling filters, but once you install it you can configure it by selecting Start->Programs->ffdshow->Video Decoder Configuration.

ok thx alot. ill dl and play around with the upscaling filters. You guys should make some nice preset for the upscaling options, thus making gamex a upscaling dvd player. :) a (what seems to be) an easy and very value adding feature in gameex.

ps you have to be a registred user to get the dvd playback via gamex in ffdshow right?

I have three HDTVs and all mine have a built in upscaler to 1080i (or 720p for the LCD). It is impossible to tell the difference in my DVD settings because no matter what I do the TV shows it in 1080i. I have found the upscaler in the TV is better than any software upscaler anyway. I guess you'll just have to see when you get one, but that's my opinion!

hey yes while playing HD dvds you dont have to upscale so much. therfore your TV seems very good. because it already displays HD movies and its a HD tv

BUT, say you want to play a old regular DVD, then FFDshows upscaling features is like 500 times better than any of the hardware upscalers out there. You have to set your TV to output 1:1 though. (to not scale anything)- this is because you can adjust everything on your own. you can set the sharpness by your selfe and alot of interlacing aliasing features n filters. making the regular (look like shit dvd on a hd tv) almoast comparable with

a hd dvd. BUT DONT SCALE BOTH FROM THE SOURCE AND ON THE TV. ONLY LET 1 machine scale. double scaling gives lesser quality.

if both your computer and your screen scales the picture (its one time scaling to muchs) therfore to both scale with the computer and with the built in scaler of the tv at the same time will give you a wors image.

PS

Headakze if DVD playback is available for non reg users aslo. what majour feauture do you get when you register gameex???
