NES Emulators load games, fail through GameEx

When trying to load roms (.nes) in GameEx, I am getting an indefinite black screen, that I can't alt-f4 out of, and killing the process via task manager doesnt reliably work either, forcing a restart. When I load the same roms via emulators they work fine. Have tried both Nestopia and FCE Ultra. I've also run them via the command prompt without issue. Any suggestions on how I can figure out why these arent loading?
