Just curious... I'd like to install GameEx onto an external USB drive. I'd then like to be able to take the drive to a friends house and just plug it in and play.

Is it possible to do this? Does GameEx use the registry to store it's configuration info?

yes and no

yes...if their emulators are on is the same directory structure as what your machine is set up

no....because unless you bring you entire USB drive has all the emulators...and you can make sure the drive letter is the same when it connects...

Set it up for drive Z:..then when you connect it should work

providing they have .NET and same controller setup...if you dont to much customizing

All games/emulators will be on the drive. 120gig worth at least :)

Not sure how I can make sure the drive letter stays the same, but what if I don't specify the letter? For example, I set my rom directory to "/Mame/roms" instead of "d:/Mame/roms" ???

The only problem that I can see is using my registration on another PC. It looks like GameEx stores the registration key in the registry, not in a configuration file, so once plugged into a different PC it becomes unregistered. :(

...Just tried it out.

When I start from the removable drive I recieve an exception error:

Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.

Process id=0x40c (1036), Thread id=0xf08 (3848)

...and when i choose to debug, the CLR debugger shows:

An unhandled exception of type 'System.IO.FileNotFoundException' occurred in GameEx.exe

Additional information: The specified module could not be found.

...and when I break, at address "GameEx.GameEx.mainform..ctor" the dissassembler shows the error at:

00000c5b mov dword ptr [eax+000002A4h],0
00000c65 mov dword ptr [ebp-54h],79h

I would think that would be like trying to use, say, Nero from your removable hard drive - I'm sure GameEx relies fairly heavily on the C:\ as far as NET stuff goes.

This just doesn't seem like it could work in any method you tried - I mean you could install GameEx on friends computer and import the gameex.ini onto your friend's HD and, if nothing else, wipe it when you leave.

But I guess I don't know. It just seems like something that just plain wouldn't work. *shrugs*

remember when you install gameex it does set a few regestry entries

you would have to install on the pc you want to use then set up the correct drive letter for roms etc
