  1. 1. How many FPS increase do you get using the optimised build?

Get your optimised build here for AMD and Intel procs.

http://redump.emubase.de/mame.php

Make sure you disable the "Use keyboard LEDS" option!!!

Use CarnEvil as your platform. For those unsure of what to do:

PLEASE RUN MAME OUTSIDE OF GAMEEX FOR THIS POLL.

1.) Start Carnevil

2.) Hit F11 key

3.) Coin in, start Rickety Town level OR "Let time input run out which will default to Rickety Town"

Take the poll and post findings.

I found using the optimised P4 build, I went from 37 - 42 "an extra 5 FPS!" Too bad Carnevil still runs like crap

My Specs:

Intel 955XBK mother board

Intel Pentium Extreme 840 3.2 proc

1 Gig of Corsair Ram 667, 12-5-5-5

ATI X800GTO not over clocked or tweaked in any way

not to get off subject...did you see that guys sempron run Carnevil? Did it run like water?

Not yet, as my other post mentioned...next week. I can't wait. I feel bad because the guy has some extremely cheap prices on sweet arcade gear and I'd hate to give him the ole "told you so."

I promise I will report back what I find out.

awesome!!

FYI on optimized builds (also not to insult your intelligence if you already know)

AMD optimized

Pentium Optimized

The are recompiles with special parameters because of the differences in cache sizes and capabilies of the processors

AMD optimized can run on a pentium processor

Pentium optimized can run on AMD

But the amount of data to grab at a time to process would be different

Say default build grabs 256k of data is grabbed per chunk and processed

An AMD build maybe set to grab 2 meg (equivilent to on board cache)

*more data grabbed at same time

A Pentium may grab 1 meg but enable pentium specific math functions

A Cyrix build may grab 128k of data instead of 256K (it would read twice, once for the 1st half, then again for the 2nd half)

Granted I dont know specifics but compilers usually have optimized for AMD, PENTIUM, CYRIX, maybe 486, K5 (old amd)

...and it wont make a NIGHT-and-DAY difference but it can buy some extra frames per second

If you are into it - look up FASTMAME on google - I remember seeing some stuff out there on how this guy optimized this build - it play some racing game pretty fast. He abandoned his projects from what I remember

thank you so much for posting the recompiles page! I figured there was something like that out there but didn't know where to find it. I am wondering though if the p4 version is any good for celerons since they have a smaller cache (L2) size than a p4. Guess I will have to try and see sometime.

My guess is that the cache size isn't as important from a compiling perspective as effectively using the SSE2 instruction set. A generic compile wouldn't use them at all.

I dont see the "Use keyboard LEDS option". Where is it? I thought it was in the misc. tab.
