I have a 15kHz arcade monitor that mechanically rotates. I think GameEX is awesome, but it won't let me rotate the menu at this low resolution. I am running Win2000 with an ArcadeVGA. Is there a workaround for this?

Thanks anyone.

Sorry, Vertical use needs to be at 640X480 or above, but try it out, in my opinion it actually lets better this way on arcade montitor, its what I run mine at. Make sure you have anti aliasing turned on, and you can use the hidden NoRotatraionRestrictions setting to make it use 32 bit colour (ant antialiasing)when rotated. I dont think your'll be disapointed if you have a fastish PC.

Thanks,

Tom.

OK, I will try that out. I just know that the windows desktop flickers at that resolution. Thanks for the great program.

It does run interlaced (flicker), but unlike Windows it should look ok/good in GameEx.

the only anti aliasing setting i see is anti alias fonts.

but i can still barely read them. i made them bigger too.

but in general, i can't take the flicker. it gives me a headache.

are there any non-interlaced modes for horizontal?

I was referring to the fonts setting. For Horizontal yes 640 X 280 or 640 X 264. Not for vertical though, sorry.

Hi, I have GameEx/MAME/AracdeVGA running in my Astro Cab in vertical orientation. I will post details when I get home tonight.

I hate having my desktop in normal orientation when the monitor is rotated so I messed around a lot and found this was the best setup. If your not too fussed about the desktop bit you can make it simpler by using GameEx to do the rotation.

1. Rotate your desktop 90 degrees using ATI tool

2. Change resolution using the QuickRes tool to 480x720 16-bit color.

3. Edit GameEx\Config\GameEx.ini

XResolution=640

YResolution=288

ArcadeMode=True

UsingArcadeVGA=False

RotatePlus90=False

DontSwitchRes=False

3. Edit GameEx\Config\GameEx.ini - Optional

UseLargeFonts=True

ShowGameInfoPage=False

AntiAliasFonts=False

OutlineFonts=False

NoWaitVSync=False

ShowVertical=True

ShowHorizontal=False

4. Edit \mame\mame.ini

video ddraw

rotate 0

ror 1 # Select ROR or ROL but only one. Depending on monitor rotation.

rol 1

hwstretch 0

triplebuffer 1

switchres 1

Most games will run properly but for some reason MAME doesn't get the rotation create a seperate INI file for that room in the \mame\ini directory that override the \mame\mame.ini settings. For example.

5. Create \mame\ini\galaga.ini

ror 0 | 1 # Select ROR or ROL but only one. Depending on which way the game needs to go.

rol 0 | 1

I hope this is everything. If it doesn't work and I have missed something let me know. If you come up with a better solution please post it!

Cheers,

Matt

Thanks for the info, i tried that with mamewah.

Here is the problem: when i rotate the desktop for the frontend i have to tell mame to rotate too (to get the game vertical) for some reason this totally messes up the colours. have any idea why?

This is a GameEx support forum. Are you using GameEx or MameWah?

I don't have any problems with the colours.

Then let me put it this way,

when I run mame rotated while the ATI hardware rotation is on, I get wrong colors. That doesn't seem to be a solution to get around any frontend limitations.

As for GameEx both 640x280 and 640x264 crash on this:

00:44:42.3 8/2/2006: Initialization OK! Starting GameEx!

but I must say info screen text looked nice.

I tried it with arcade mode on and off. 640x480 still works.

I have the first generation ArcadeVGA (7000).

640x288 seems to work horizontally,

But not when the desktop is rotated. GameEx doesn't run at all on my computer with the ATI hardware rotation.

I have noticed this as well. I tried switching the X/Y but it doesn't like it. There needs to be some logic that works in conjunction with the Rotate90 switch when validating the parameters.

If you do not rotate your desktop, you can use the coordinates 640x288 but you need to set RotatePlus90=True. Then use ror 0 in mame to get the rotation of the games right. The only problem with this simple setup is the desktop orientation.

I had problems with screen orientation after I upgraded mame. I did a fresh install of mame and created a new ini. That fixed the problem.

Cheers,

Matt
