I was almost ready to order a lcd topgun, but I heard somewhere that you had to be atleast 6 feet away from the screen for them to work properly. I would be playing on a 19 inch crt monitor and that wouldn't cut it being that far away. Can anyone confirm this

I may be wrong, but I believe the distance you stand is variable based on how far you place the LED stands... ie: the further apart they are, the further back you have to stand.

So a 19" monitor is small enough that you would only have to be a few feet back. Again, I may be wrong but I have read this several places.

does anyone know if the screen resolution effects the gun or the refresh rate of the monitor.

and i wonder if you can buy a holster for it??

For anyone that has this gun how big are the led stands and what do they look like exactly. I assume the gun jsut plugs into the usb port, do you have to plug these in as well?

no man, the screen has nothing to do with it. The LED bars and the gun handle everything. This is why it works with things like projectors on a wall.

Technically you could set up an old fashioned shooting gallery if you just had a program that told it the positions of the targets... hehe, thats not a bad idea actually...

A: Act lab guns have crap accuracy and they have to be calibrated EVERY time you turn them on

I have a old one, this is true about the calibrating... however their accuracy was great.

The new version is expensive but it is... more accurate and does not need to be recalibrated ever while on the same system.

Well man, I havent gotten mine in to test this yet, but my plan was to use the guncon driver (as mentioned above). this tells the machin that the lightgun is a mouse. Then you just set your lightgun controls in mame to be mouse operated. I use mame32p gui to do all my configuration, and it all carries over to the command line options that gameex calls.

I can't offer any help on defining the controls in the straight mame command lien version, as ive neevr tried (seems like an unessecary headache).

the lightgun comes with two gun to mouse drivers v 1.0 and v3.0

it works fine on the desktop opening folders with precise accuracy.

but when im on mame its about 6 inches out now..

as you can tell ive figured out how to get it working on there just a few teathing problems now.

and the recoil action is ******** cool

ive got it working ok now

i downloaded the lcdgun2mouse v3.2

and it works great

also with mame if you change the resolution of the game in mame settings to 1024x768 it works perfect,

maybe its because my desktop resolution is that,???

i have posted the gun2mouse driver here v3.2

p.s

i have bright lights on three of my arcade cab buttons.

the lightgun does not work with these on.

i had to disconnect them.i also have three buttons with l.e.d. lights on ,they are fine with the gun.

im just giving you all a heads up..

i hope the resolution isnt that big of an issue - my arcade monitor can't display anything above 800x600 - and it doesnt even like that setting very much.

i think as long as you have the mame settings the same as your monitor it should work ok

dont quote me on this

My 2 LCD TopGuns work perfect using the latest guncon2 drivers and the current version of mame. Not the easiest to setup and you will probably run into a problem or two while setting them up but they do work great. Oh and the only driver that works with mame 104.u5 and up is the guncon2 drivers. Check out this unnoficial FAQ:

http://www.wizardsworks.org/chod/gun/topgun.htm

you say you got two lcd topguns to work on mame

are you running windows xp

because i heard that can cause problems because xp doesnt handle 2 mice properly..

I got my topgun in finally... does it not come with the ac adapters needed for the gun to recoil? Or is the the point of hooking up both usb cables?

if thats the case I'm going to have to buy a usb hub and try to find some way to mount it somewhere int he cab that leaves me enough cable to stand back while opening up a new usb slot for me.

So far it's acting really wonky, hopefully after some calibration it will live up to the hype.

And now Im finding that smogg's guncon 2 driver site is down.... and the driver that came with the gun doesnt do anything at all.

Anyone got smoggs guncon driver available?

managed to lcoate a second mirror for the guncond river, only to realize that my cabinet has a reclined monitor, and the LED stands ahve to be perfectly vertical.

I may try actually mounting them on the side of the cab rather then inside flush against the monitor, although I can't imagine that being a very 'clean' looking set-up.

well my l.e.d stands are on quite a tilt and they work perfectly.

and yes you are better off getting a usb hub,but get one with external power adaptor because the gun draws a lot of power for one standard hub?

ian to help it work better, calibrate it when the lights are off.

the less lights the better. apart from the monitor of course.

im using lcdgun2mouse driver 3.2 wich is desighned for this gun and seems to work 4 me?

thanx gerble1000

important notice with lcd topgun

i thought i could just get a usb hub with external power wich i did and it had a 1amp 5v rating..

doesnt work

it cant handle it.

i wanted it to extend the cable length so i could mount it propally.

it doesnt work..

solution is

cut and extend the wire on the usb part of the gun(only the add on wire usb part)and plug it into another usb.

preferably one built into the computer.

the gun takes a lot of power.

and put the main usb part of the gun to any working usb port.

i even tried rewiring it to the 5v on the power supply in the atx..i smelt burning DONT TRY IT..

tip

if the gun doesnt recoil when you pull the trigger even before you install the driver.

try puting the usb leads in different ports, because 1 of the usb leads (the add on 1 thats removable from the gun)is only used for power, it has no other use.so you should be able to pull the trigger and have the recoil work when its plugged in and computer on .even before you install it.

mine works fine now
