Inputproblems with ZSNES

I have some problems with using my usb-gamepads in zsnes. Always when i restarted my system it seems, that all the configuration regarding the pads is gone, so that i have to re-configure them. How can i reach the input-configuration-menu when starting zsnes in gameex? Always when i press "esc" to get to the menubar the emulator stops and i am back in gameex. Is there a better way to reach the menu than exiting gameex and starting ZSES manually?

Easiest way for me was to set the controller up in ZSNES without running GameEx. Once ZSNES has it's configuration, GameEx will operate the way it should (since GameEx only launches the program, ZSNES will use the .ini file you set up previously)

Might I mention - get acquanted with your F keys! (aka F1 F2 F3 etc) :)
