So I'd like to think I've looked around quite a bit for others who might have had the same question as me and what I've found doesn't help me at all.

1. How can I get rid of those stupid MAME messages that doesn't involve what seems to be the useless option under the advanced mame settings and without having to compile some source code? It literally makes the screensaver attract mode useless to have on.

2. Is there a config for wired X360 controllers so I can play most of my MAME ROMs without having to configure the controls for each game? (I am aware of the general control settings in mame but I cannot even get to that menu now because my controls are so F**ed)

I'm most grateful for any help because the way things are for me I can only look at my MAME games and barely because of the on screen messages screwing with my attract mode.

I have no doubt you searched, we all search, but the problem occurs when you don't what it is you're searching for :)

#1 - You can't! Unless, well you guessed it - compile your own version! There is no easy way out of this. You either:

a) - Download the MAME that the Dev's offer and accept the screens you mention

B) - OR you build your own (like most of us do) and get rid of all that nastiness.

#2 Yes there is, but you will need to start with with a clean MAME.exe. Type this to generate a general profile:

<yourmame.exe> -cc

so for me (mame64.exe) i will send this: mame64 -cc

There are many ppl here that will help you if you don't feel too confident, just ask ;)

compiling stuff just brings back bad memories for me lol. Isn't there a place that would have a version of mame that got rid of the messages and is already compiled? and I'm not quite sure I follow. Where would I be entering this <mame.exe> -cc command at?

Since the MAME team is dead set against that, no.

Why not just Google Mame Compiler 64? You don't even need to know much of anything to make that work.

You would enter that in cmd.exe ... Do you not know how to run things from command line? :-)

There is no way to get rid of the messages without compiling your own version of MAME as has been suggested. We do not provide any pre-compiled or otherwise modified versions of MAME, nor any links to those that may. You will have to search for it.

If you are willing to compile your own, as Adultery suggested, Google is your best friend.

Well I was not aware of the taboo so it would seem compiling my own MAME is my only choice. I know very basic command line stuff lol. I will google mame compiler 64 as you suggested. I was hoping there would be an automated builder of sorts. I used to have to compile DaedalusX64 back when I was helping with ROM testing, then they released an autobuilder.. Its been a long time since then though so I basically remember nothing about the proccess. I'll get back to you guys when I figure this stuff out.

Mame Compiler 64 is exactly that, an automated building app.

Thank god for automated builders. This is going to take some time since this thing needs mingw and the dl speed is really slow for some reason... From the instructions though it seems pretty easy. I cant download the MAME source though I'm getting a 509 bandwidth limit exceeded when I click the dl link?

Give it a few and try again. I get this error too sometimes.

PS: mingw only needs to be downloaded when they update the toolchain, so you won't need to download this every time you build mame.

It appears I've been successful in compiling the source code. I also found an unofficial build that I added the source of and all seems to be working well. Just have to add it to my GameEx configurations and toss out the old MAME. Will confirm everything is working after I play around with it for a little bit. After that I could use some help with setting up my 360 controllers to play most of the MAME games.

Alright so all is well now! Attract mode is attractive now lol. Now I just need to get my 360 controllers set up so I can actually play some game. Does anyone else here use 360 controllers to play their MAME games? Could I just take someones config and overwrite mine? or do I have to manually set up each button and direction myself?

Just press TAB in any game and edit the input settings.

I really don't want to. the controls for my 360 controller are already mapped all over the place by default and its screwing me over. I got the same buttons doing too many differnet things. If there weren't any controls set already I'd be more willing to go through all that.

Posted

I believe that this is a per game setting within MAME itself and does not change your 360 controller default settings.

You can set inputs for global or per game. What does your mapping have to do with other things? This is just for mame, so what's the difference?

Maybe I'm not understanding you, but having a config is the same as just doing it via the tab menu.

Like I said I really don't want to configure my controls every time I play a new game. What I was saying is MAME already has tons of buttons already mapped using my 360 controls like joy1 and joy2, and the controls aren't configured properly. Anyways I ended up deleting every single button setting and did everything fresh. Was kinda annoying. Not to mention I have no clue what some of the controls even mean lol

You can probably use Adultery's Xpadder plugin along with Xpadder to create a default MAME profile, however, as there are so many games that do not follow a default convention, you may find it necessary to do exactly what you don't want to do. Pimpin' ain't easy... and emulatin' ain't either!

Like I said you can just do a global mame setting, no need to do it for every single game.

Sometimes you have to, that's just how it is. This hobby isn't for the lazy... Your time will be spent doing tedious things. That's the nature of the best unfortunately. :-)

Yeah, I figured lol. I mean I'm definitely used to tedious work getting emulators to work at their very best. MAME has just been one of those emulators I've never messed with beacause it was so intimidating compared to how other emulators work. But since I got a 1.5TB External HDD for Christmas I've been "Pimpin" my computer up haha. and it most definitely isn't easy. I guess you can mark my topic as resolved now I'd do it myself if I could find the edit button.

I really appreciate the help from everyone, I'll most likely need more help in the future with other things lol. You're all awesome! :D
