[RESOLVED] Learning Curve = Really High and for 2 days I cannot make steam work

Let me start by saying, I have built 3 arcade cabinets, and this is the first time I have tried to do it with GameEX. Since this is the first cabinet I have built with a high end PC/Monitor/Graphics/etc. I decided to purchase GameEX on the spot for the steam support.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I am going to list the things I am having problems with in order of how badly they make me want to slit my wrists.

1. Emulator Download and Install

I tried using the auto install feature... apparently the versions supported have not been updated for a VERY long time. I wish there was an easy way to tell GameEX, "Hey, I got that crap installed right here, give me the customization menu to change settings for it" without having to install the dated versions listed on the download button. (there probably is, but my frustration level is soooooo high at the moment I am losing the battle for sanity). The absolute most frustrating of these is DEmul. I have a pristine working .582 with perfect config for my system running outside of GameEX. But getting it to even recognize all my games, let alone sort them by some other means than "naomi/atomiswave/etc" is seeming to be all but impossible. I almost wish I could just write a bunch of batch files to launch DEMul with the titles I want and then just add the item to the launch screen under "fighting games" or some other easy to understand for someone who does not build these for a hobby. Because I tell you, 99.99999999 percent of the people who go to play on my box, don't have a clue what any of it means. But they do know that, "hey, under fighting games, I can probably find marvel vs. capcom 2", or that r-type will probably be found under "2d scrolling games"

2. Steam Support

This is the SOLE reason I went with GameEX and donated sight unseen. Yet, I have fiddled and fondled, and default configured, and reinstalled, over and over again without success at getting steam to show up. Steam even passes the config verification screen and in the gameex.ini file, steam is enabled.

3. Custom Menu

Why for the love of pacman can I not just select a dang game as an item from the drop down? Is there a good way to make my "personal" groups of games without having to build a flippin database for gamebase?

If I can get the top three dealt with, I will personally do cartwheels down the freaking hall, record it on my brothers go pro, then upload it here for everyone's enjoyment. I can figure everything else out... or at least get to the point where I am focusing on building a silly awesome theme or something.

1. The easy way: use the installer to do the initial install, and update your emulators yourself. If you have several cabinets already, this should be easy for you to do right? Go get the updated version and overwrite the old version with the new one.

The harder (but my preferred) way: Set up the emulator manually from jump. I don't personally use the "let GameEx install it" option, I like full control of everything and I prefer to set all my paths manually. I'm more than happy to help with that.

2. Install Steam. Enable Steam in GameEx. The rest is automatic. You really shoudn't be having this much trouble with that feature. Hell, even I can do it!

3. I'm not sure I understand what you're asking here, you want single games on your main list as o[[psed to emulators? Custom Menus is more advanced, let's get a handle on the basics first mate.

Hi Slavearm and Welcome to the GameEx forums!

Sorry to hear about the difficulties you've been having. GameEx is generally regarded as one of the easier frontends to set up, so let's see if we can't set you right with some of these issues eh!?

1. I have never once downloaded an emulator through the Setup Wizard. I appreciate that the feature is there, and it is probably a boon for new users, but I'd just as soon download my own directly from the project page of any given emulator. Purely a personal preferance, but it sounds like you're in the same boat. Having said that, it should be super easy to configure this way in GameEx. Just add the emulated system from the emulator selection screen in the setup wizard(and potentially select the matching emulator), and just move directly to the Emulator Configuration screen (without opting to download anything). So long as you select the proper working path for your pre-existing emulator it should work just fine. If you're having issues with your game lists you could always just use a map file to configure the lists as you please.

2. As far as Steam goes it's pretty much just as Adultery describes. Is Steam running when you start GameEx? Are you signed into your Steam account when GameEx is running? Most importantly do you have Steam games installed on the same machine that GameEx is running on? Steam functionality is a registered feature, but you mentioned that you are in fact using a registered version of GameEx, so that shouldn't be the issue.

3. Custom Menus. If I could offer a humble piece of advice here, I'd get GameEx up and running before I even considered implementing custom menus. Quite frankly it's an additional layer of complexity that you don't need right now, and you're probably creating more headaches for yourself in the process. We'll get there, but for now let's take some baby steps! Let's get some of these other issues in the "win column" before we worry about those whiz-bang custom menus eh?

4. I'm gonna hold you to that cartwheel thing.

In the meantime let's focus on one item from your list at a time. Pick one and we'll go from there!

1. I am going to try the copy over method since I have the emulators already setup on my NAS. I did something in the middle, and think I like this approach. Plus I know my MAME 151 and matching rom set are golden. Since they split DEmul into its subcomponents, I am still going to have an issue here potentially, but we will give it a shot.

2. I am going to reinstall gamex. I initially had the non-registered version for about all of 30 minutes. But I will try again. I can launch steam games, and ensured steam is running. I have only 2 games installed locally that I want to work. SF4 Arcade and KOF13.

3. What I am trying to do is make lists of games regardless of emulator. Fairly easy to do on my older systems, not sure I have a clue how to make that happen in GameEX yet.

4. I will be on it.

Is there a good way to completely remove gameex and all of it's settings so I can try a clean install? Steam is not working and it is doing some cool double mame thing with different settings for each.

Also... why does it really like mame32? Since it is a frontend, why not just leverage mame? Right now, when I did a manual mame load, it only shows me the zip file names instead of the rom names and even when I launch one, it just flashes the screen then comes back to gameex. I guess maybe this is such a fun experience because I already have working emulators and front-ends and I am expecting gameex to behave the same way.

It doesn't have a mame preference, not sure where you get that from. You're not using integrated MAME support if you're only seeing ROM names, you're doing everything the hard way.... You have much to learn grasshopper.

PS: I don't use that theme, I use MegaMAME. I forgot my miserable first attempt at a theme, thanks a lot bub.

So, I just wiped everything and started fresh. I installed steam, then installed skullgirls, SF4AE, and KOFxIII from steam and ran each of them. I have imported my DEMul emulator and MAME 0.152 to c:\arcade\[emulatorname]. I have run demul and mame directly and everything works.

Then I performed GAMEEX setup, had it say yes to steam, installed both demul variants, and installed mame.

Now, I went through the demul emulator settings and pointed them at the correct directories for my setup under c:\arcade\demul. Next I went to mame setup, and pointed it to my mame folders in c:\arcade\mame.

Here is what is working:

• MAME (and I mean everything. only existing, cab images, pcb... everything)

Not working

• Demul (Naomi)/Atomiswave

1. Inside the list of games under the emulator, when you select one, the actual title is greyed out, but there is a list of numbered files that I can only assume are the roms/zips
2. When you select one, Demul just opens and brings your to the Demul Select a ROM screen

• Steam

1. I am not an idiot at this point. It doesn't work in this version. It doesn't even show up anywhere. I don't get the nag screen and have a valid regkey. Also it passes all the checks in the verify, and I can launch steam games directly from steam without issue.

At this point... I am willing to do a webex (I have an account) with anyone willing to work through this. Something is not right with 13.20. It is either broken, or the instructions are no longer accurate.

I have Steam enabled on my fresh install and, other than enabling Steam support, automatic signon is disabled and no username or password data has been entered (Steam is enable on my system at start) and it runs flawlessly with 13.20. Not knowing how you have Steam setup on your machine, I believe that it does require that you are contacting the Steam servers (Online Mode)in order to load and cache the videos, etc. within GameEx.

I think I know what is wrong with DEmul. The wrapper is passing the wrong -rom=value Instead of using the zip name -.zip it is trying to load a file within the zip. Goofy. I am going to have to figure out how to create custom mappings probably to solve that one...

For steam I dont have a clue at this point. I tried disabling the auto signin, as you do, but nothing shows up still

So for Demul, do you have GameEx's Roms In Zip/7Zip/RAR option turned on under that emulator's advanced config? If you're trying to pass the zip file, turn that option off.

Not sure why you have so much trouble with Steam. I installed it and have it run when Windows starts and it just works for me... That was the easiest one of all for me as far as setup works. :'(

Yah... and I launched SF4AE just to make sure then closed it and launched GEX.

Just out of curiosity, you know steam uses the steam://gameid format to launch the games. Do I need to have a specific Internet Explorer version installed for GEX to find it?

All I did was enable it in GameEx, I didn't make any sort of additional changes or set up any MAP files or scripts.

As for the Steam issue, I am stumped. I just built a new machine about a month ago so my install of GameEx 13.20 is fairly fresh and unaltered and Steam loads up for me with just enabling the functionality with little to no input required. Something is blocking it and I am willing to bet it is OS and not GameEx. If you are using a firewall, check your logs, you may also need to check event viewer to see if something gets noted there in the logs. Also, ensure that you have full rights to the GameEx folder and subfolders and, if not already, have Gameex.exe set to run as administrator.

IE is not in use so should not be an issue.

I don't believe you need any specific version of IE installed. When you're inside of GameEx are you looking under Emulated Games/Steam Games? That's the default location for the Steam list, and it is a bit unusual since Steam is not an emulator and doesn't run emulated games ... but there you go. I could certainly see that throwing someone for a loop if they didn't know where to look. If you don't have that list present in GameEx would you mind checking your GameEx installation directory for the following file and posting it here?

I'm not so much worried about my log not finding the SDK packages, but the fact that your log is neither finding nor even looking for any Steam games seems like a critical difference. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way Steam itself is configured on your machine.

I can see in my c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\ the manifests for the installed games. Maybe I should try reinstalling it to like c:\steam. Perhaps the spaces are giving it grief? Is there a way I can tell it where to look for the steam files?

That being said, Steam Games do not even show up under emulated games.

Check your root GameEx folder properties - is it set to read only? Check the Security tab and Adminstrators and System should have full access. Are you logged in with Admin rights?

My Steam install is under C:\Program Files (x86) by default. I have UAC disabled. Maybe he should test disabling UAC and see if that remedies the issue short-term before uninstalling/reinstalling Steam? IDK. I'd piss on a spark plug if it would help.

Well ... not really. That file lists the Steam games in your collection, but I believe it needs to be created by GameEx. It's kind of like the map file that GameEx uses to list your Steam games and associated information. If GameEx isn't finding your Steam games in the first place I doubt that manually creating steamdata.ini will do much to change that.
