OK, so with the very latest version, which I have already had a whole load of problems with the touch screen update (if anybody remembers?)

Anyhoo... Just installed into a standalone machine with XP SP3, did the web update and whatnot and now upon boot after about 20 seconds I get a dialog with "Failed Download"

This is made more annoying because I just replaced my XP default shell with GameEx.

Furethermore, this seems to happen every 20 seconds, even more annoying. Entering a game and exiting causes this to happen, or even leaving it idle.

I have disabled automatic updates in the setup wizards.

This renders the machine useless as it does not (yet) have wifi or a permenant ethernet.

I have to open it up and connect a keyboard and mouse to sort this out, every time I go in and out of a game.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

PS, although I am able to connect this machine to ethernet, which I did for the update, I do not have the capability to do so 100% of the time without dragging ethernet string around the house.

One option would be to download to an network connected machine the full install, then copy to a USB flash drive and install it that way.

As for the internet connectivity, I have used (and still do for that matter) ethernet over powerline connections. It is great for remote locations and the throughput is comparable if not better than 801.11G speeds, depending on how far removed the source and destination ports are from being on the same wiring within the home's electric grid.

Sure, I have a WiFi card ordered, but is it a requirement of GameEx to have connection to internet?

I have several powerline connectors but these are not convienient. I have a metal cabinet with no holes for exit of extra cables other than power and I would like to keep it that way. Having said all of this, I doubt how much success I will have with a WiFi card inside of a metal cabinet.

Somehow I feel that I'm in the minority here! ;)

While it isn't a requirement to have an internet connection, it does make it a little easier to update your rig. I believe you are in the minority, but not necessarily a small one regarding your cab. Likely you will have to make a compromise and either widen the existing hole to snake through an ethernet cable to hook up to your network or do your updates manually via a flash drive.

I don't think you will have much success with wireless ethernet if the antenna is encased in metal. I think that in order for it to communicate out the antenna would have to be exterior. At least if connected to your network, you could enable Remote Desktop to remote into it (provided your version of XP supports it) to eliminate the need to hook up a keyboard and mouse when performing maintenance.

Also, I should note that trying to uninstall GameEx 12.22 on XP reports that I am unable to install the application because I am not on a 64bit version of windows?

Furthermore, the setup wizard softcrashes at multiple points due to NULL strings when setting up external emulators.

Seriously? WTF? Am I the only person using this software? Are there this many errors?

So far I have had the worst user experience ever, doubled or even quadrupled by the fact that I've paid for this.

Seriously starting to regret going with this install.

The issue is fixed in the next release. Available in a few minutes. PS: I am guessing you are from the UK?

Yes, I am from the UK.

Please provide a fix ASAP.

I'm starting to feel like a beta tester.

I thought so, judging by the whining ;) The new release is available.

Only whining like a bitch because I've wasted so much time getting caught up with errors :)

Must be running into 12+ hours of setup errors, mainly because of the previous touch screen update which scuppered me.

However, thanks for the update, I shall give it blast right now.

Tom - Is whining a Brit thing? I would never know it by watching BBC America. Well, except when Jeremy Clarkson loses to James May or Richard Hammond in one of their races on Top Gear.

Logik1 - Being scuppered is a bit overstating, isn't it? ;)

Well, the whole "scuppered" thing is because GameEx would only present lightgun games to me, whilst having a full Mame RomSet. No matter what I did. I was convinced I had done something wrong and it was only when digging on the net that I put two and two together that I discovered that the latest version had been "optimised" for touch screen devices... Meaning that my second Wacom Cintiq display counted as touch screen saw me only listing light gun games. Quite maddening to say the least. This literally took me a whole day to track down. I had no idea why this was happening.

To define this in a user experience way, it would be nice to know what the new update is doing... perhaps detect if we are updating and then display the GameEx menu?

Well, you got this error fixed in 15 minutes ;)

Is this an automatic update? or manual? My machine isnt updating with ethernet attached.

Well TV is TV and we are not all like it. Yeah, some Brits make your "hear" about it, even though they still get there. The Australians call us whining Poms.

It should do if you restart GameEx. If not just do a manual update. The new version is out there.

Oki doki, will have to wait till tomorrow now... Circumstances are this machine doesnt have access till then.

Cheers

No worries, sorry again for the trouble. Hopefully it will be worth it in the end.

I know that, just poking ya in the virtual ribs. Just like some people really believe that if it says so on the internet, it must be true. I wonder what the Aussies call us here in the States?

No access to a flash drive I take it?

I think the issue is that it is shelled without keyboard and remote access.

I dont bother with shelling myself. Too much hassle when your updating things. Best to not shell or leave it alone ;)

There are many people using the software. These errors have not been reported and are not affecting many people. Sounds like your XP install is screwed but Id be interested to hear about the setup wizard crashes. I cant duplicate it here. Worst user experience ever and you've paid for it? You are gettiting countless hours of one and one support from the developer of the product and a leader in the field.

±1 to that. Who really is gonna see Windows on startup? My cab runs all day anyways.

In general, most software is designed to run on machines that fit within a wide spectrum of hardware and OS configurations. Native touchscreen support in XP is not very well supported and does not fit within the wide spectrum noted previously. Might have better luck with Windows 7 where touchscreen support is better.

All kidding about aside, I have had my machine take one craptastic leap off the deep end requiring me to reimage and reinstall everything. It is a pain in the ass to say the least and things still aren't quite perfect or like they were before having to redo everything. Yes, I paid for mine, too. So now I come to realize that all of this time I have missed out on blaming someone else for my problems... silly me! I never once thought to blame Tom or GameEx for the problems I had.

I am, to be honest, pretty sick and tired of people coming in here and waving their "purchase" of the software about and demanding action. Seriously? I can only sit back and laugh so much at the adult temper-tantrums. The staff here will usually bend over backwards to lend a hand to those that are polite and understand that, like them, we are hobbyists as well - not their corporate help desk.
