[RESOLVED] Launching roms reverts back to menu
nullPointer replied to allthingsgreen's topic in General
Hi allthingsgreen and Welcome to the GameEx Forums! GameEx does not include any emulators or games. I believe what you are seeing is the demo artwork and videos that is included with GameEx for demonstration purposes. Check out the \GameEx\DEMO\ directory to see what I mean. You actually need to supply (and configure!), all the emulators and games which can then subsequently be configured to run through GameEx. Hopefully that's not too much system shock! The good news is that you can download emulators directly through the GameEx Setup Wizard, which does in fact provide some great convenience. Obviously we are unable to supply you with any information on obtaining games though. Good luck man, and we're here to answer questions or provide troubleshooting should you hit a snag. -
Good to hear! Was it just a matter of allowing some extra time for the downloads?
-
This is also correct (and typically the procedure I myself follow ). The EmuMovies Downloader will allow you to have a greater degree of control over what gets downloaded and when. The integrated artwork download certainly wins in convenience though!
-
In that case you may just want to leave GameEx running for a while, as Tom suggests. This holds especially true if you have a significant number of ROMS, being as videos are larger chunks of media and can take a while to download depending on the speed of your network connection. Hopefully that should set you on track. Also remember that that EmuMovies doesn't necessarily have video snaps for every game under the sun, so some titles may not have associated videos (although they certainly have more available than any other available online source!)

Hi guys I just wanted to let everyone know that I moved all support posts to the VIP thread found here. Just a bit of housekeeping in the interest of keeping support threads separate from GameEx release threads. Everything in its proper place! Thanks guys!

Do you have a paid membership at EmuMovies? The Automatic Artwork Download functionality will only download screenshot snap and title images if you have a free EmuMovies account. I'm not sure what you mean about the N64 looking different in the emulator. N64 emulation in particular can be affected by multitudes of factors including different emulators, different graphics plugins, custom texture packs, etc. In many cases the quality of emulated graphics may differ drastically from what you see in the artwork. It might be worthwhile to ask around over at EmuMovies to determine how various artwork was captured (i.e. what emulator settings were used and that sort of thing).

Back on topic this problem sounds similar nay identical to the problem described here. In that case it was necessary for Tom to address the issue. I'm wondering if maybe we had some weird regression occurring here?
-
Sorry to steer Steering off topic but DD/MM/YYYY MM/DD/YYYY 11 / 05 / 2014 = 05 / 11 / 2014? I was just saying I don't necessarily think he's doing something wacky with his system date; the log is probably just representative of the system date-time format.

I really hadn't even noticed it until you mentioned it, but now that I do see it I think you're right. Good call! -
Awesome news! I'm always impressed by Riffman81's willingness to help out around the forums, and his enthusiasm for GameEx both here and elsewhere beyond these forums. Thanks for being a part of this community Riffman81 and congratulations!

I'd certainly be down for giving it a shot. Trouble is I SUUUUUUUUCK at shmups ... like out loud. It's actually a major contributing factor to my general arcade game suckage. But hey if only three people were playing I'm a virtual shoe in for 3rd place! Hooray mediocrity!
-
Also remember that the process of setting up emulators outside of GameEx will certainly not change one iota. It would be better to have all your emulators ready to roll (especially so for working out all the applicable command lines and tweaks), so when Evolution drops the process of configuring the front end should be quick and easy.

Hi Charles! Regarding your registration issue please contact Tom Speirs directly. You can do that right here. He'll have you fixed up in no time flat!
-
Awesome release! Thanks so much for your fantastic work on this Tom. It's really cool to be getting an early preview of GameEx Evolution functionality. Cheers! I took the liberty of fixing that up. All good now.

Looks fantastic! Great job Adultery!

Actually I don't have too much of an idea what I'm talking about, other than I gather HP Sauce is kinda sorta a rough equivalent of A1 Sauce in the States, and Marmite tastes (and smells) like ... sweaty gym socks? What can I say I'm a wanna-be Brit! Any hoo ... congrats once again to Mame Offender on a remarkable Golden Axe win!
-
Dude! Go watch King of Kong. Do it now. Do not do anything else. Kidding, but I bet you'd find it highly enjoyable. And you'd discover the identity of our friend Mr. Mitchell up there (for better or worse ). Heh ... the sauce of manliness! But not as manly as Marmite.

Can the Steam Web API can do the job here? GameEx needs to know what games are installed locally on the client machine running GameEx. You could have 3 different machines running Steam all with different games installed from your Steam library. In the past GameEx has used local Steam files to determine what games are installed locally (or at least it used to employ \Steam\config\config.vdf for this purpose). I don't know too much about the Steam web API though. Is it possible to return a list of games installed on a specific Steam client machine?
-
Probably the easiest way is to look at the URL on the Steam store for the game in question. So continuing the example above, the URL for Star Wars: Dark Forces is: http://store.steampowered.com/app/32400/ I was hoping I had a few of these games installed so that I could do some cross testing, but unfortunately I do not. Based on these games though I'm not sure that the problem you're experiencing is related to the issue I described above. Normally a config is typically related to games requiring DOSBox, Java, or a similar "unknown" process. The list you provided looks like it consists primarily of regular ol' DirectX games (not sure about Divekick). Would you mind recreating the problem on your system and posting the contents of your GameEx log after having done so? Thanks man!
-
Hi Vlad I'm guessing this is most likely related to a specific set of Steam games that require a special config in GameEx. You can find these configs in the \GameEx\MEDIA\STEAM\CONFIGS directory. For example the game Star Wars: Dark Forces (AppID: 32400) is actually run via DOSBox in Steam. So in the GameEx config for that game (32400.ini) you would need to add the following line: overidewaitprocess=dosbox This way GameEx knows that it's actually the running DOSBox process that indicates that the game is still running (rather than the game launcher or whatever else). Otherwise GameEx doesn't "know" that the game is still running and will return to the frontend as you describe. Unfortunately it's necessary to deal with these games on a case by case basis. What specific games are giving you issues?
-
That's pretty much how it should work, but occasionally Steam has updated their client in such a way that changes the way in which the Steam games list is parsed. That's very rare though. For comparison's sake would you mind posting up a list of the Steam games you have installed on your GameEx machine? It might be helpful to see if there are certain specific games which are not being detected properly. Thanks man!
-
Let us know what you discover, but yes Steam functionality in GameEx requires that you have installed at least one game locally through the Steam client.

I really like the direction you've gone with these most recent Atari screens Krak. Well done! -
I would recommend against using a plasma screen for your play field. Maybe for your back glass, but even then I'd be pretty hesitant. The main reason for this comes down to the differences in construction between LCD and plasma screens. Plasma screens consist of a thin layer of inert gas sandwiched between two layers of glass. For the most part they are designed to be placed vertically and left that way. Placing them horizontally for long periods of time may eventually cause the layers of glass to delaminate under their own weight which means the screen would be irreversibly damaged. Plasmas are also more susceptible to burn in which is another concern particularly if you're leaving a single table running for long periods of time. Of course newer plasmas have better construction than older plasma screens, but even then it's going to come down to your own varying mileage. Really after all the hard work you put into a PinCab would you want to risk it? (even if it did save you a few bucks?)
